The sgraffito (from the Italian
language « sgraffia », “to scratch”),
is a medieval technique consisting of sculpting a fresh mortar.
There are ornamentations on facades which were made at the
beginning of the century and which are still visible. The sgraffito
is a true artistic work, used a lot in Maghreb and in eastern
countries like Poland, Rumania and Hungary.
The mortar of lime, which is easy to colour and very long to
dry, is well adapted for this kind of work. |

The mortar with
earth and the earth of construction (the “adobe” technique)
have often been sculpted as in Morocco and Yemen.
The coatings with plaster and lime, which are “faster”, require a
solid preparation of the framework. |
