The technique consists on
scratching the 1st layer of mortar according to a precise pattern.
And the mortar which was under the first layer will appear.
The thickness of the two layers of mortar is very important
because it will determine the contrast between light and shadow.
The colour of the two mortars can be the same. In this case,
it will emphasize the engraving effect more than the colours
effect. |

| The differences of textures often create a very beautiful result.
Indeed, the sculpting aspect of the pattern is emphasized.
The first mortar can be grainy if we add some sand and the
second mortar can be very smooth. |
