DECORATIVE COATINGS

The house painter considers the coating as a “garnishing” mixture used in order to wreathe the surface of the wall and in order to paint it. The stucator considers the coating otherwise. According to him, it is a mineral-material-based mixture in order to decorate the wall. And, this last definition is the “historical” function of what we call “the coating”: to protect the masonries and to create a decorative aspect of the wall.
That is why we can undoubtedly say that the coating as decorative function dates back to the beginnings of Building, much more before the Antiquity. And the lime is considered as Queen of decoration because you can build, coat, decorate and paint with it. Plaster appears just after with the mixture “plaster and lime”.
